Programs

In addition to its Hungarian language and culture courses, DSS is also proud to host on a regular basis a variety of international conferences both in English and Hungarian.

Furthermore, we attach the same level of importance to various EU and V4-funded projects through which we expand the scope of our international relations either as a participant or as a coordinator of the activities of our foreign partner institutions.

Projects

ICT4LWUL - ICT based methods for teaching Less Widely Used Languages (2017-2019)

Debrecen Summer Schools is one of the partners in az Erasmus+ KA2 project whose main purpose is to modernise the teaching methodology of the so-called „less widely used and taught languages” with the help of ICT. The time period of the project is two years coordinated by Bridge Language School in Oradea (Romania) and involves four more language schools from Florence (Italy), Lodz (Poland), Prague (Czech Republic) and Tallinn (Estonia). All the six partners have different tasks within the project but all of them are expected to send 2 teachers to three different teacher training events. These trainings are designed to show how teachers of these languages can make use of

  1. e-learning,
  2. public media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.), and
  3. smartphones

in their work. Trainings will be conducted in English but the participating teachers undertake to prepare similar exercises in their mother tongue which will be collected for dissemination and practical work in a Handbook to be completed by Debrecen Summer School. For further information on the project can be found here and at the following link.

Erasmus+ KA1 (2017-2018)

This is the third time that Debrecen Summer School has been awarded funding by the Erasmus+ KA1 adult education mobility project. This time 6 members of our staff will be able to attend language courses which also offer some special cultural knowledge. The project based on „in vivo” experiences will certainly add to the quality of the work of our institution. The countries to be visited include England, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.

Eight for Great (2017-2018)

The project is coordinated by a Greek association called Octanous in close collaboration with the social cooperative enterprise (SCE) Pramata & Thamata and 9 agencies from respective EU countries. 50 youth workers and youth professionals, coming from 10 different EU countries will participate in a ten-day long training course in Kalamata Messinias (7 days) and Athens (3 days). The Eight for Great training course is designed to promote three European initiatives, i.e. the European Framework for the Key Competences for LLL, the Youth Guarantee Scheme and the European Solidarity Corps.

Our Visegrad: Creating Visible Ideas for the Young (2016-2017)

The main purpose of the project supported by the International Visegrad Fund is to make the students of the participating schools in Debrecen, Gogolowa, Ostrava and Sucany express their idea of Visegrad in visual forms. The Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovak schools will organize local drawing competitions and the winning students will have the chance to tale part in a Creative Workshop in Debrecen in August 2017. The website of the project can be visited here.

Erasmus+ KA1 (01/06/2015-31/05/2016)

This is the second time that Debrecen Summer School has been awarded funding by the Erasmus+ KA1 adult education mobility project. This time 7 members of our staff will enjoy the benefits of further practical education and exchange experience in an international environment. In order to improve the quality of work in our institution, our colleagues will visit and learn about best practices in the following countries during a uniform six-day stay in them: Belgium (1 person), France (1 person), Romania (2 persons), Slovakia (1 person) and Turkey (2 persons).

Do You Speak Visegrad? (2015-2016)

The aim of the project, financed by the International Visegrad Fund, is to establish a language-learning network of the V4 countries, which would enable high-school students to learn about the cultures and languages of the four Visegrad Group countries. High schools in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, who are concerned about their traditions, will organize a competition about these four countries. The winners will have the opportunity to visit the country that has organized the competition, where they will spend two weeks learning about each other’s culture and acquiring the basics of the local language.

The Rise and Fall of Trenches (01/01/2015 – 31/12/2015)

The 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I is one of the priorities set by the Citizens Programme (strand 1, European Remembrance) for the year 2014. In an attempt to contribute to the commemoration, Mentores proposes the project The Rise and Fall of Trenches, which will illuminate the global conflict that gave a completely new shape to the geographical, ideological and cultural map of Europe, let alone the numerous casualties in all its member states.

Participants of the project are from Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Hungary, Italy and Greece.

Lexipedia (01/09/2014 – 31/08/2016)

Language is more than mere communication; it is a tool for thinking, for the intelligentsia, for culture and history. Linguistic poverty has always been around the youth, thought not limited. The project Lexipedia contributes to the linguistic education of teenagers and the development of their vocabulary in a highly attractive way. The project motivates students, educators and agencies in Greece, Hungary and Romania. It aims to plan, realize and assess a vocabulary bee, with contestants high-school students between the ages of 13 and 14.

Erasmus+ KA1 (01/07/2014-30/06/2015)

In order to maintain a high level of efficiency of our services in the future, it is essential that each of the eight staff members of DSS should be given the right opportunities to further develop their personal skills by participating in proper training courses in truly international environments. The application is to serve exactly this purpose through 8 individual mobility projects into such countries as Austria, Germany, Italy, England, Sweden and Slovenia.

Who Learns Our Languages? (2014-2015)

The aim of the project, supported by International Visegrad Fund, is to analyse the current status of the instruction and acquisition of the V4 languages in the V4 countries. We plan to make a survey of the study of Czech as a foreign language in the Czech Republic, Hungarian in Hungary, Polish in Poland and Slovak in Slovakia. You can visit the project’s website here.

PractiCAL (2011-2013)

Language-teaching methodology has always been regarded as an issue of great significance at our institution. Therefore, it was our pleasure to be able to join a two-year European project which aims to explore the methodologies of teaching the so called “less-widely used” languages. A joint effort by six countries (Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, and Turkey), the project is titled PractiCAL: Practicing Culture and Language.
The Facebook page of the project can be found here.

Revealing Solidarity (2012-2013)

The main event of the fascinating program, which involved more than 15 European countries, took place in Debrecen in May 2012.

2inPhil (2011-2012)

2inPhil attempted to redefine town twinning and explore its future potential from a novel approach. Debrecen Summer School was honoured to be invited by the main organizer, ECOSE.org.

Grundtvig műhely (2010)

Debrecen Summer School considers it a high-priority issue to facilitate the educational activities of Hungarian communities beyond the borders by organizing workshops and training courses on methodology. This endeavour has mainly been realized by means of EU project funding. The first DSS event of this nature took place in the fall of 2010 with the support of the Grundtvig program. The project was given the title Preserving Mother-Tongue Culture in a Foreign-Language Environment. You can visit the project’s website here.

Cooperation with Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel

Debrecen Summer School, founded in 1927, continues to be strongly committed to promoting the cause of Hungarian language and culture to individuals or institutions interested in the past, present or future of Hungary.

During the past nine decades, there has been a total of almost 3,000 American students taking our two- or four-week programs, most of them with some Hungarian background. It is also clear for us that, while some Hungarian-Americans are not very keen on learning their ancestors’ language, they might still want to be in touch with the present reality of Hungary and follow the events shaping its contemporary history.

Based on our institutional and personal experiences, we know that there are quite a few American students who would be happy to do a short course in Hungary, but most of them are in need of financial support to come to Debrecen on their own. Since we would love to have as many friends of Hungary from North America as possible attending our courses (enclosed please find a detailed course description), we have decided to try and continue to establish long-term relationships with our new sponsors or supporters who could make it possible for some more students to immerse in Hungarian culture.
