Methods of Payment

Course Fee

The course fee covers the cost of teaching, except in the case of the Hungarian Language and Culture Summer Courses and Modern Hungary where the course fee includes the following costs:

  • tuition fee;
  • Saturday excursion(s) (1th and/or 3th week);
  • Debrecen Sightseeing;
  • evening cultural programs (including the welcome and farewell dinners).

The relevant course fees are listed in the appropriate individual course descriptions, which can be paid in the following ways:

  • by bank transfer to the account number of Debrecen Summer School (receipt or proof of payment to be enclosed).

  • in cash. You can make payments in cash or with a bank card personally in the office of Debrecen Summer School (H-4032 Debrecen, Egyetem tér 2., University Church Building).

Please indicate on your application form if you wish to receive an invoice. Please make sure that you provide the correct invoice details (name and address), as we are not able to reissue invoices. If you do not give us invoice details, your invoice will be automatically issued to your own name and address.

Discounts

General Discounts

  • Early bird Discount: If you apply for any one-week course, two- week course or four-week course in Debrecen and pay the whole tuition fee at least two months before the starting date of the course, you get a 5% discount on the tuition fee.
  • Continuous Study Discount: If you take at least two two-week courses directly following one another, you get a 5% discount on the tuition fee of both.

Discounts available exclusively for the summer courses Hungarian Language and Culture Course and Modern Hungary:

  • Returnee Discount: A 5% reduction on the tuition fee is granted to returnees who participated in the Hungarian Language and Culture Summer Course in the previous year.
  • Family Discount: A 5% discount on the tuition fee for immediate family members.
  • Diaspora Discount: A 25% discount on the tuition fee for persons of Hugarian background who receive a letter of recommendation from an organization to prove that they are active members of relevant Hungarian community.
  • College/University Group Discount: 50% discount on the tuition fee, if at least 6 persons/group come to a course from the same institution of higher education.
  • Discounts cannot be combined.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

  • The advance payment is non-refundable.
  • If you cancel your application  before the start of the course and have already paid the course fee, we refund your money minus 10% .
  • If you leave the course prior to the departure date, your course fee will not be refunded.

Visa

  • If you need a visa for your stay in Hungary, you will need to arrange it yourself. Please make sure you start the procedure in time.
  • Debrecen Summer School can provide you with an acceptance letter required for your visa application after you have paid the full amount of the course fee. Processing an acceptance letter takes 2 working days.
  • If you cancel you application because you have not received a Visa, we refund your money minus 100 EUR .
  • Scholarship holders from Tempus Public Foundation or from Debrecen Summer School shall be exempt from the above regulations.
  • If the participant is enrolled in a group and his/her visa expires during the course, the regulations enlisted under Cancellation and Refund Policy shall be applied.
  • If the participant in a private course and his/her visa expires during the course, s/he may complete the course online.

Insurance

  • Travel, accident and health insurance must be arranged by the students themselves.

Age Limits

  • The minimum age for enrolment in a course at Debrecen Summer School is 16. However, participants between 14 and 16 years of age can form a separate group of minimum 4 students. In this case, accommodation and supervision shall be the responsibility of their parents, of which we need the parents’ written statement.
  • For participants under 18 years of age, the Adult Education Contract must be signed by the parent(s), too.

Basic Academic Information

Hungarian Language Courses

  • The various types of language courses at Debrecen Summer School are as follows: one-week courses; two-week or four-week summer courses; semester courses throughout the academic year; private courses on demand for private individuals.
  • Depending on the type of any given course, courses are launched at one or several distinct levels: beginner (ACTFL low novice), elementary (ACTFL mid novice or CEFR A1), pre-intermediate (ACTFL low intermediate or CEFR A2), intermediate (ACTFL mid intermediate or CEFR B1), upper- intermediate (ACTFL high intermediate or CEFR B2), advanced (ACTFL advanced or CEFR C1), and proficient (ACTFL superior or CEFR C2). See the specific level choices at the descriptions of the individual courses.
  • English is used as the language of instruction at lower levels. At one-week and two-week courses, you can also opt for German as the language of instruction.
  • Classes are 45 minutes long, and are routinely held in double (90-minute) blocks.
  • There is a placement test administered at the beginning of our courses, on the basis of which participants are placed in groups that correspond to their level of fluency. There is no placement test to be taken by absolute beginners.
  • On the first day of courses listed under the registry number E/2020/000097 an Adult Education Contract shall be signed between the participant and Debrecen Summer School.
  • In the case of courses listed under the registry number B/2020/000223, the participant shall accept the General Terms and Conditions and confirm it on the Application Form.
  • Students who have attended at least 80% of the classes can receive a Certificate and/or Certificate of Completion. The Certificate and/or Certificate of Completion shall be issued on the participant’s request. The Hungarian-language Certificate will include neither the level of the course nor the number of credits. This information will be stated only in the Certificate of Completion issued both in Hungarian and in English.
  • Debrecen Summer School grants credit points (ECTS) for participation in its courses. It is at the discretion of the home university to decide how it converts the credits to be compatible with its own system. If you wish to receive credits for course work, please make sure you find out about the credit policy of your school prior to the course. The credit values are indicated in the detailed course descriptions.
  • Students at our courses are instructed primarily out of Debrecen Summer School’s own teaching material series called Hungarolingua.
  • Related services: placement test; assessment of training requirements and provision of training consultancy; “tandem” chat with native Hungarians; optional modules of leisure activities, extra language classes, and special-interest cultural sessions.
  • Debrecen Summer School is a training school of Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church and is involved in the teacher-training practice of trainees majoring in Hungarian. This means that certain classes (in a limited number) are taught by teacher trainees under the guidance of trainers who regularly teach the groups in question.

Thematic Courses

  • The thematic courses are offered in English to those who are interested in the fields detailed in the relevant descriptions.
  • The thematic courses comprise 45-minute classes (held in 90-minute blocks) with alternating lectures and seminars.
  • There is no precondition for attending the thematic courses but a good command of the language of instruction is a must.
  • Ont the first day of courses listed under the registry number E/2020/000097 an Adult Education Contract shall be signed between the participant and Debrecen Summer School.
  • In the case of courses listed under the registry number B/2020/000223, the participant shall accept the General Terms and Conditions and confirm it on the Application Form.
  • Students who have attended at least 80% of the classes can receive a Certificate and/or Certificate of Completion. The Certificate and/or Certificate of Completion shall be issued on the participant’s request. The Hungarian-language Certificate will include neither the level of the course nor the number of credits. This information will be stated only in the Certificate of Completion issued both in Hungarian and in English.

Foreign-Language Courses for Hungarians

  • Students can sign up by completing the appropriate application form, which can be downloaded from our website.
  • These courses are normally offered during the university (fall and spring) semesters or as private courses any time during the calendar year.
  • Languages: Arabic, Korean, Chinese, Japan, Norwegian, Romanian, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Russian, stb. (may be expanded upon request)
  • Group levels are announced at the descriptions of the individual courses.
  • At the beginning of our courses, participants take a placement test, on the basis of which they are placed in groups that correspond to their level of fluency. There is no placement test to be taken by absolute beginners.
  • The participant shall accept the General Terms and Conditions and confirm it on the Appliaction Form.
  • Students who have attended at least 80% of the classes can receive a Certificate and/or Certificate of Completion. The Certificate and/or Certificate of Completion shall be issued on the participant’s request. The Hungarian-language Certificate will include neither the level of the course nor the number of credits. This information will be stated only in the Certificate of Completion issued both in Hungarian and in English.
  • Students of the University of Debrecen can also sign up for these courses in the Neptun system. Upon successfully completing a course, participants can earn 2 credits for it.
  • The price of the teaching material is not included in the course fee.

Foreign-Language Courses for Foreigners

  • Students can sign up by completing the appropriate application form, which can be downloaded from our website.
  • These courses are normally offered during the university (fall and spring) semesters or as private courses any time during the calendar year.
  • Languages: English, German, Norwegian, Russian, Swedish (may be expanded upon request)
  • Group levels are announced at the descriptions of the individual courses.
  • At the beginning of our courses, participants take a placement test, on the basis of which they are placed in groups that correspond to their level of fluency. There is no placement test to be taken by absolute beginners.
  • The participant shall accept the General Terms and Conditions and confirm it on the Appliaction Form.
  • Students who have attended at least 80% of the classes can receive a Certificate and/or Certificate of Completion. Getting to Debrecen

Debrecen is accessible by air directly or by transfer from several major cities in Europe (including London, Munich, Eindhoven, Malmö, Leipzig, Hamburg, Milan, Paris, Tel Aviv, Moscow, Frankfurt or Düsseldorf). Further information: http://www.debrecenairport.com/

If you come by car, take the M3 motorway from Budapest and then M35. The toll can be paid at any of the motorway petrol stations. Take the first exit to Debrecen from M35 (Debrecen észak), and in the city follow the signs to Debreceni Egyetem. The drive takes about 2.5 hours. Please let us know if you wish to use the parking lots on campus.

IC (Intercity) and fast trains from Budapest to Debrecen leave from Budapest Keleti and Nyugati Pályaudvar (Eastern and Western Railway Stations) and also from Ferihegy Railway Station. You can buy your train ticket either at the railway stations or online. For online ticket purchase and train schedules, visit www.mavcsoport.hu/en. If you arrive at Budapest Liszt Ferenc Nemzetközi Repülőtér Terminal 2, Ferihegy Railway Station is accessible by bus 200E, or bus 900 by night. For the relevant timetables, please visit www.bkk.hu/en/timetables. Bus tickets can be purchased at the airport from newsagents or from ticket machines at the bus stops. It is also possible to purchase a ticket from the bus driver.

You can also take an airport transfer service from Budapest to Debrecen or back, for which we recommend the company Agora Transz-F’Air Kft., whose website is: https://www.agoratrans.hu/.

In Debrecen: 

From Debrecen International Airport you can go directly to the city centre by the Airport Debrecen bus line (Airport 1-2), the time-table of which in most cases is aligned with the arrival and departure times of the planes.

The final stop of the Airport bus is the train station (“Nagyállomás” stop), where you have to change to tram No.1.

Take tram No. 1 from Nagyállomás [Railroad Station] to Egyetem [University] (the 12th stop). You can (pre-)purchase tickets at Nagyállomás or on board from the driver and validate them on the tram.
